Mummy star’s racy lesbian scenes in new film
RACHEL Weisz is about to bare all in steamy lesbian sex scenes with Rachel Mcadams. The Mummy actress describes their naked lovemaking in Disobedience, a film about forbidden romance, as “beautiful”. And Weisz, who is married to James Bond star Daniel Craig, strongly defends the film’s highly erotic moments, saying: “Usually there’s little point to sex scenes, but in our story it’s a love scene that’s about freedom.” Oscar-winning Weisz, 48, plays Ronit, who has been banished from her orthodox Jewish world after being found in bed with her best pal and lover Esti, played by Mcadams. When they meet again years later, Esti is married and the two women rekindle their love affair. The scenes were shot last year before Weisz became pregnant with her first child with Craig. She already has son Henry, 11, with Hollywood director Darren Aronofsky. Craig has a daughter, Ella, 25, with ex-wife Fiona Loudon. Weisz, who also produced Disobedience, formed a close bond with Mcadams, 39, after their raunchy scenes. Weisz said: “Even though Rachel is a Protestant and Canadian, she completely identified with Esti. She was our first choice to play the character.
“I’ve never been in a film before where I had so many scenes with another woman and where I was able to connect to a female character in such a close way.”
Disobedience, out in the UK in September, looks set to be another highlight in Weisz’s glittering career, which includes an Oscar for 2005’s The Constant Gardener, and roles in About a Boy and Constantine.
Weisz, whose dad is Jewish and mum Catholic, drew on her own experience and knowledge for the film.
She said she was fascinated by orthodox Jews: “They’re a very tight-knit community and rarely mix with outsiders. I doubt whether they would have wanted to speak to me. It’s not part of their culture and that’s why there’s still so much mystery surrounding their community and how they live.
“I grew up in a fairly non-religious home, but I grew up with an understanding and awareness of Jewish culture.”
