500 TREATED FOR SPICE IN ONE JAIL

Zombie lags call medics 10 times a week

A HOLOCAUST survivor known as the “Bride of Belsen” after marrying a British soldier who liberated her has died at 95.

Gena Turgel withstood four concentration camps before being freed by the British from Belsen in north Germany in 1945.

Polish Gena, youngest of nine children, lost most of her family after war began when she was 16.

She was marched from Plaszow camp to Auschwitz in winter 1944. A few weeks later she and her mother spent four weeks on a “death march” to Buchenwald MORE than 500 prisoners were treated for the effects of zombie drug Spice last year in just one prison.

Almost a third of the 1,000 in HMP Humber claim to have got a drug habit while inside.

There were 533 medical call-outs at the category C jail last year – more than 10 a week.

Figures come from a new report by the jail’s Independent Monitoring Board, which said: “Psychoactive substances continue to be a major issue.”

It said the East Yorks jail held a “high proportion of vulnerable individuals” and Spice increased “the level of violence on the wings”.

Earlier this year prison chiefs ordered all mail to its inmates to be photocopied to prevent drug-soaked letters being delivered.

The move came after the Sunday People revealed Spice was being sprayed on to letters and even pictures drawn by children for their prisoner fathers.

And nurses have been told to stop tending convicts at another jail awash with Spice – Holme House at Stocktonon-tees – for fear of exposure to fumes.

Glyn Travis, of the Prison Officers’ Association, said recently that Spice was an “epidemic” in prisons, causing violence, selfharm and suicides. He said: “Spice is now the cannabis of the 21st century.”

The Prison Service said: “Since this report HMP Humber have taken a range of measures to tackle drugs, including extending substance misuse support to seven days a week and increasing mandatory drug testing and the testing of incoming post.”
