AFTER STRING OF CLANGERS, EVEN PALS URGE PM... SACK BORIS

- By Nigel Nelson POLITICAL EDITOR

THERESA May is being urged to sack Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson – by some of his OWN supporters.

MPS who backed him in the 2016 Tory leadership contest say he’s now rocking the ship so much he must go.

While they agree with what he says they take exception to his lack of statesmanship.

One senior Brexit Tory said: “He’s more demanding than my child. He’s obviously not used to hearing the word no.” And another insider added: “A lot of MPS think he really is a petulant child. The question is whether the PM is powerful enough to sack him.” In his latest outburst Mr Johnson was recorded at a private dinner last week saying the PM’S Brexit strategy lacks guts and Donald Trump would do a better job. He also slagged off Chancellor Philip Hammond’s Treasury as “the heart of Remain.” Last month he angered MPS by asking for his own jet so he would not have to take commercial flights on official trips. But if Mrs May does feel strong enough to wield the axe she would then be faced with installing another Brexit big hitter at the Foreign Office. That would make Environment Secretary Michael Gove’s promotion almost inevitable

Meanwhile, it has emerged David Davis never intended to resign during his two showdowns with the PM last week, according to insiders. And rumours he would were put about by a aide fed up with the PM’S dithering.

Mr Davis just wanted to time limit the UK’S membership of the EU customs union in Mrs May’s backstop option.

She wanted to leave the date open but compromised with Mr Davis on a 2021 target. A Whitehall source said: “Those meetings were pretty robust.”

Mrs May will this week urge MPS to reject 15 Lords amendments in key votes on her Withdrawal Bill. But it would need just 12 Tory rebels to scupper her plans.
