Eaten alive by a snake

- By Alan Selby

THIS is the horrifying moment the lifeless body of a mum is cut from a 27ft python after it swallowed her head-first.

Wa Tiba’s two children discovered the bloated beast barely able to move a day after the 54-year-old went missing while out gardening.

“Everybody was crying, everybody was shocked,” said villager Ayu Kartika. “The poor woman. This is like a horror movie. People are terrified. We are scared to go outside. We can only pray for our safety.”

After she went missing locals began searching around Mabolu village on Sulawesi island, Indonesia.

Police superintendent Agung Ramos said: “Children and residents had been looking for Wa after she did not return home. Some items belonging to the victim – sandals, a machete and flashlights – were found but the victim was not there. Residents found a python that was unable to move. They suspected the snake swallowed Wa Tiba.

“People took the snake into the village and started splitting the snake. The suspicions were true and there was an intact body inside. Unfortunately the victim was lifeless.”

Wa’s head was towards the snake’s tail and her feet at its mouth, showing that she had been swallowed head first.

Hours after the grim discovery she was buried in a traditional ceremony on Thursday afternoon.

Sulawesi is home to some of the biggest and most deadly wild pythons in the world. Farming, forestry and fishing are the main industries, meaning many people spend large amounts of time in the wild, increasing the risk of them being attacked by predators.

In March last year, the body of a young farmer was cut from a giant snake that had swallowed him while he was harvesting rubber.
