England v Australia One-day series TOP BOY ROY

Sri tamper tantrum England’s Jason ruthless Aussies’ Paine toothless

- By Tom Hopkinson in Cardiff

SRI LANKA are facing an ICC probe after a row over ball-tampering overshadowed day three of the second Test against West Indies in St Lucia.

Towards the end of day two, umpires asked to see the hands of Dhananjaya de Silva, the fielder shining the ball who was wearing bandages.

After giving it some thought overnight the umpires called for a change of ball, and furious Sri Lanka refused to take the field for two hours. SUMMARY

Arizona Diamondbacks 7, New York Mets 3; Atlanta Braves 3, San Diego Padres 9;Baltimore Orioles 0, Miami Marlins 2; Chicago White Sox 3, Detroit Tigers 4; Cleveland Indians 3, Minnesota Twins 6; Kansas City Royals 3, Houston Astros 7; Los Angeles Dodgers 3, San Francisco Giants 2; Milwaukee JASON ROY plundered a magnificent century as Australia captain Tim Paine lost a tooth and then the game.

Roy (below) clubbed a fine 120 before Paine dismissed him with a brilliant one-handed catch low down to the left.

What made it all the more remarkable was that, only moments earlier, an Aussie medic had whipped out one of Paine’s gnashers after Andrew Tye’s legside delivery had bounced awkwardly and smacked him in the chops.

Paine will have face-ache for days if the swelling on his top lip is anything to go by.

And a headache, too, as he tries to work out a way for Australia to turn round a 2-0 deficit in this ODI series.

They were better here in Cardiff than they were at The Oval earlier in the week.

Although watching England’s bowlers attack Shaun Marsh and Ashton Agar was a lot like pulling teeth.

In the end, Adil Rashid had Agar well stumped by Jos Buttler. And when Marsh went, bowled by Liam Plunkett soon after, it was as good as game over.

Those two were the pick of England’s bowlers – Plunkett ending on 4-53 and Rashid with 3-70.

Moeen Ali chipped in with 2-47 and Mark Wood 1-57.

But it was the batsmen who really did the damage against the Aussies with a total that would have taken a Brewers 13 Philadelphia Phillies 2; New York Yankees 5; Tampa Bay Rays 0; Oakland Athletics 4, LA Angels 8; Pittsburgh Pirates 3, Cincinnati Reds 2; Seattle Mariners 7, Boston Red Sox 6; St Louis Cardinals 5, Chicago Cubs 13; Texas Rangers 5, Colorado Rockies 9; Toronto Blue Jays 6, Washington Nationals 5.

(Bellinzona - Bellinzona, 123km): real effort to chase down. The day had not started well for England, with skipper Eoin Morgan forced to withdraw 20 minutes before the toss with a back spasm.

Sam Billings came in with Buttler taking over the reins as captain and the wicketkeeping gloves.

It was Jonny Bairstow who got England off to a flier with an impressive 42 off 24 balls.

And when he went, Roy took control of the game for some time before Tye and Paine combined.

By then, Buttler was in full flow, too, and he smacked an impressive 91 from 70 balls as England reached 342-8.

Buttler’s ramp shot for six over fine leg off Jhye Richardson was arguably the shot of the day – until he followed it up with a carbon copy which went even further off the next delivery. Impressively, England put on 50-plus for each of their first five wickets – the first time that has happened in ODI history. And in what was surely another first at a ODI, maybe even all forms of the game, a group of naked cyclists passed along the tow path next to the River Taff to give the crowd an eyeful. With Travis Head and D’arcy Short out cheaply, Australia did not make the swiftest of starts. And it was not until Marsh, who scored 131, and Agar combined that they ever looked like getting near England’s total. When Agar went for 46, they were always going to struggle and Marsh soon followed. 1 A Demare (Fra) FDJ 2hrs 41mins 17secs, 2 F Gaviria (Col) Quick-step Floors at same time. 1 R Porte (Aus) BMC Racing Team 28hrs 47mins 17secs, 2 Nairo Quintana (Col) Movistar Team at 17s.
