TOURISTS returning from Hurghada in the early hours of yesterday claimed they had also fallen ill at the Steigenberger Aqua Magic.

A flight landed at Manchester Airport just after 2.30am carrying 100. Claire Wheeldon, 37, from Chapel-en-le- Frith, Derbys, said: “I’ve was really ill while I was there, I still am. It’s the food. My daughter had some chicken but when she took a bite it was pink inside.

“We didn’t find out the poor couple died until Thursday, no one said a word. It was a bit scary.”

Janet Rawlingson, 43, of Chelmsford, Essex, added: “They didn’t tell us for two days but they expected us to stay and eat and drink in that hotel. I didn’t sleep on Thursday night, I was checking my kids were breathing all night. They came round and checked all the air conditioning. There was sickness and diarrhoea and stomach problems in that hotel.” But Tracey Wooffindin, from Sherburn, North Yorks, who was staying in the same block as the Coopers, praised the staff. “It was clean, the food was good. They were mortified when it happened and were very apologetic,” she said. “I think some people are jumping on the bandwagon, it’s usual to get a bit of Delhibelly in Egypt.” Thomas Cook customer service reps were waiting to meet the holidaymakers. The firm also gave them a letter stating: “We are sorry you were not able to enjoy your holiday as planned. Our primary focus is the health and safety of customers.”
