NO MOVES BY UNITED

- EXCLUSIVE by Steve Bates

MANCHESTER UNITED made NO attempt to sign Toby Alderweireld or Danny Rose in the summer transfer window.

That’s according to Tottenham, who claim they were not contacted by anyone from Old Trafford in the days before the window shut, despite reports claiming otherwise.

In fact, it’s emerged Spurs informally contacted United to ask if there was interest in either of their stars in the lead up to deadline day.

The answer was a decisive ‘no’, backing up Jose Mourinho’s stance that United were never close to doing a deal for any central defender or full-back before the window closed on August 9.

A Spurs source revealed: “There was never any interest from United in either Alderweireld or Rose – so I wasn’t a case of us refusing to sell either player to them – they never spoke to us.”

United had been linked with a £45million move for Belgium star Alderweireld all summer but it is believed United’s main target was Harry Maguire.

That proved impossible to pursue with Leicester resolute he was not for sale – even at £70m.

United’s interest in Rose ended last season after Mourinho was told by Ed Woodward they would not be paying £50m plus for a player who was nearing 28.

Instead, Mourinho was told to get the best out of £29m buy Luke Shaw, 23.

Paris Saint-germain are interested in taking Tottenham and England left-back Rose on loan with a view to a permanent deal.

And Marseille have joined the race to sign Rose before the European window shuts. They are keen on a similar deal, with Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino willing to let Rose leave – on loan or permanently.
