Boos follow Royals’ woe

- By IAN BAKER at the Madejski Stadium

READING’S chances of finding a first league win of the season were gone in 15 seconds to leave boss Paul Clement frustrated and disgusted.

The Royals are secondbottom after failing to claim victory in any of their first six games of the campaign – and fans let him know what they thought as they howled boos of discontent at the finish.

Wednesday made it three Championship wins in a row, as Adam Reach struck in the first half before Lucas Joao’s effort, 15 seconds into the second half, sealed the game.

Not even Liam Moore’s consolation could lift the mood around the Madejski Stadium.

And miserable Clement (above) said: “It was a nightmare start to the second half. There is no excuse in that situation after coming out after 15 minutes of rest and recovery.

“It was a bad situation, we keep shooting ourselves in the foot. We could do without having to climb a mountain.

“It was very frustrating – it’s been a very frustrating start to the season. Over the six league games we are where we are as we’ve not been good enough. It’s simple as that. We need to find a way to stop this.

“I take responsibility. It is normal that the manager does that.

“I’ve also asked the players to think about whether they are doing as well as they can.”

Wednesday were rewarded for their positive start when Reach carefully found the bottom corner from Matt Penney’s pullback.

Reading could have levelled when Cameron Dawson skilfully kept out a Mo Barrow effort.

But the Owls killed the game as a contest seconds after the restart, as Joao buried from 20 yards from Barry Bannan’s pass.

It could have got worse for the Royals with Vito Mannone saving in sensational fashion to foil Atdhe Nuhiu. A triple substitution of Liam Kelly, Marc Mcnulty and Josh Sims brought the Royals to life.

Skipper Moore headed home from Leandro Bacuna’s 65th-minute corner. But there was to be no equaliser as Reading’s horror show continued.

The future seems brighter for the Owls, who have put a difficult start to the campaign behind them.

They have further ammunition in the shape of loan signings Michael Hector and Josh Onomah, who did not play yesterday.

Boss Jos Luhukay said: “The team worked very hard over a very intensive 90 minutes.”
