Warnock: I’d love to see Pep boss club like mine

-

Graham Thomas NEIL WARNOCK believes Burnley boss Sean Dyche will never get a top job – but predicts the glass ceiling will be smashed by Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.

Warnock – whose struggling Cardiff City team host the Clarets today – is one of only six British managers in the Premier League, but none of them earn their crust from the big half dozen.

In fact, with Dyche finding life tougher than last season, the only Brit in a squad even when the coaching staff aren’t involved.

“A lot of the lads travel into training together – and those car pools give you an opportunity to talk about things a bit more than the players at other clubs probably do.

“I suppose it is a bit unusual, Premier League footballers sharing lifts into work, but a lot of the lads live close to each other so it make sense.

“I guess that’s just how we are. We’re a very down-toearth bunch and it’s good to have that extra couple of hours together in a car, getting to know each other that little bit better.

“It’s just a little thing but I think it is good for team bonding.” When Burnley face the top half of the table is Eddie Howe at Bournemouth.

Little wonder, then, that Warnock reckons it will require the next generation such as Gerrard at Rangers and Derby’s Lampard to shatter perceptions of homegrown prowlers of the touchline.

“You can’t blame the owners who have paid billions,” says Warnock, who will be 70 this year.

“If you can get Pep Guardiola, then you get him, don’t you? If you can get a Jose Mourinho, then you pay for him. Personally, I would love to see one of those guys managing a Cardiff or a Burnley, but I don’t think that’ll happen.

“I think it will now be very difficult for a British manager to end up at one of the top-six clubs.

“But I am pleased that Gerrard and Lampard are having a go. I think they will get more opportunity than lesser names among the English lads.

“Hopefully, one or two others who had good playing careers will try management, too.”
