Box New Pussycat Singer Tom fighting fit on new exercise regime

Migrants battle their way to US

- By Janine Yaqoob TV EDITOR

MIGRANTS desperate to enter the US try to break through Mexico’s southern border.

Some got past fences while others dived off a bridge into a river to dodge checkpoints.

But Mexican riot police drove them back with tear gas and several migrants were injured.

Around 3,000 have marched through Central America from Honduras. A woman said she had lost two of her children in the chaos. Marta Cazares, 28, said: “We’re running away from violence and they just hit us more.”

US President Donald Trump has threatened to cut aid to countries allowing them to pass.

He said: “They might as well turn back, they’re not coming into this country.” TOM Jones is boxing his way to fitness after being KO’D by a viral infection.

The 78-year-old singer was forced to cancel gigs after being rushed to hospital in July.

But now he’s preparing to return to his role as a judge on The Voice in the New Year.

Talking about his new fitness regime, he said: “It’s good to be back. Everything’s good now – I’m on top form.

“I’ve got a trainer who comes to see me. A lot of stretching and boxing thrown in. “He puts the gloves on and we do a couple of rounds in the gym, which is really good. It’s a good cardiovascular workout. “It keeps me on my toes. I do it twice a week. I get in the gym whenever – three times a week usually. I try to watch my diet too.” The What’s New, Pussycat? singer revealed how he became ill while on the road, and was taken to hospital. “I was in there for four days and they checked everything and said it was a viral infection,” he said. “I just didn’t feel good and they said you need antibiotics. So they gave it intravenously and that was it.

“But I had to cancel shows. So that was a big deal.”

Asked if his boxing jab would stand him in good stead when he gets back in the ring with his ITV talent show rivals will.i.am, Jennifer Hudson and Olly Murs, he said: “I might run out of steam. I’d have to knock them out fast.”

After a career spanning 55 years, he says plans for a TV biopic are still being discussed – after revealing he’d love Robbie Williams to play him. “There’s quite a few people who are talking about it,” he said.

And Tom – who lost wife Melinda in 2016 – hasn’t ruled out starring in it himself. “I’d like to do more acting – it just depends on the role,” he said.

Giving his verdict on rival show Strictly, and the illicit kiss between Seann Walsh and Katya Jones, he said it wouldn’t have happened if they were happy with their respective partners.

“If you are married, if you’ve got a steady girlfriend or boyfriend and that’s pretty solid, whatever you do on the show your relationship should be safe.”
