THE ONLY WAY IS PUP Life-changing dog for autistic lad

- By Karen Rockett

AN autistic boy who is terrified of the outside world is finally enjoying family days out – after making pals with a labrador.

Even trips to the shops would make eight-year-old Ty panic and bolt.

His mum Selena dreaded going out, until they got their incredible dog.

Selena said: “It was very difficult to take Ty out so it was often easier not to. But he has three brothers including an identical twin. It wasn’t fair on them.

“Ty has real sensory issues. Too much noise, crowds or strange smells and he’d bolt. It was dangerous and so stressful for his brothers as we’d all be looking for him.”

The solution was two-year-old autism assistance dog Denby.

Selena said: “Denby acts as an anchor for Ty. He has a handle attached to his jacket and a belt that is clipped to Denby so the pair are tethered.

“If Ty tries to run off, Denby stops him in his tracks. He responds to my commands and eventually will respond to more commands from Ty.

“Now Ty loves going out. He packs OUR vet Brian Faulkner, from Petplan, has 22 years of experience and is a freelancer working all over the country. Ty feels safe and secure. They developed a very special bond.”

Selena heard about Denby through Dogs for Good, which help people with disabilities as well as autistic children.

Maddy Phelps, from the charity, said: “Assistance dogs can help build independence and confidence in children by helping with practical tasks such as opening and closing doors, dressing and undressing.

“The dog also offers unconditional love, becoming a friend who is always there for them and a positive focus for the family who may have been under considerable strain or conflict.”

Full-time mum Selena, from Wymington, Beds, said: “It’s been lovely for me too as my partner Paul is a lorry driver so he’s away a lot.

“It’s nice to have the company and security a dog brings.

“Ty’s twin brother Jude was due to get an award in assembly. This was enough for Ty to have a meltdown but the school let Denby sit with him to calm him so I could focus on Jude.

“The whole family loves Denby.” MY pet dalmatian had puppies this week, but one of them won’t stop crying – sometimes for over an hour each morning. What can I do?
