WAG SWAG Lamps: He’s worth his weight in gold

- By JAMES NURSEY at Pride Park

REG HARRISON led out Derby at the age of 95 — and Rams’ No.9 Martyn Waghorn reached his 100.

Harrison was feted as the last surviving member of County’s 1946 FA Cup-winning side, after being given the freedom of the city.

The former winger, and the Derby boss Frank Lampard, were then delighted to see Waghorn chalk up 100 career goals as he opened the scoring shortly before the break.

The ex-sunderland trainee added his eighth of the season 19 minutes from time.

Waghorn, a £5milllion summer signing from Ipswich, was then replaced by debutant Ashley Cole, 38, to an ovation.

Lampard said: “Martyn’s fantastic in the dressing room and for what he gives off to the rest of the squad.

“More than that, it’s the quality on the pitch – it’s a big number of goals.

“Long may they continue. They were two great finishes. He gave everything i n an all- round performance of work-rate and quality, of hold-up play and two great goals.”

But Hull could have led had in-form Kamil Grosicki, who has five goals this term, not scuffed an effort on to the post from Fraizer Campbell’s pass.

Derby took control after that as midfielder Tom Huddlestone put two efforts just over.

Tigers keeper David Marshall had to stretch to claim Fikayo Tomori’s header from Harry Wilson’s free-kick.

Then Marshall was called into action again, diving to his left to hold Duane Holmes’s deflected shot.

It was Holmes’s clever reverse pass that played in Waghorn to score at the second attempt after Marshall saved his initial effort.

Derby could have doubled their lead after the break but Tomori put a header wide from Wilson’s corner.

Waghorn might have had another in the 66th minute but couldn’t connect with a shot on the turn.

But he struck again in the 71st minute after brilliant work by full-back Jayden Bogle on the right.

The youngster chased down a lost cause, nutmegged Kevin Stewart and crossed for Waghorn to score from 12 yards.

Hull boss Nigel Adkins said: “We hit the post early on which could have changed the game.”
