Secret role of unit linked to the SAS

- By Sean Rayment

THE Special Reconnaissance Regiment that Danny Johnston served in was formed in 2005 to provide British special forces with vital intelligence.

The personnel were originally drawn from a shadowy organisation – never officially acknowledged by the Ministry of Defence – known as 14 Intelligence Company.

The unit was highly secret, operated in plain clothes and conducted intelligence-gathering operations against the IRA.

The organisation was so successful that it contained some of the most highly decorated soldiers in the Army.

Today the SRR is based in Credenhill close to the SAS headquarters near Hereford.

The regiment works closely with the SAS and the Royal Navy’s Special Boat

Service. The SRR has been deployed on operations in Yemen, Iraq, Afghanistan and Northern Ireland. They worked on the front line in the war against Islamic State, identifying extremist commanders, known as high-value targets, for the SAS and Special Boat Service to kill.

Members are trained in covert intelligence gathering and closequarter combat.

Sensitive

The regiment is believed to be the only part of the special forces which recruits women and personnel fro from all three of the armed force forces.

Since 20 2016, the SRR has had approval to t advertise across the arm armed forces for pers personnel seeking “unique, “un sensitive and rewarding” rew em employment.

The unit’s work includes hours of surveillance using sophisticated e equipment, as well as specialist driving courses. cou
