Jobless Alberto Gomez, 26, is said to have admitted the sickening cannibalism to cops making inquiries about his missing mother.
Officers allegedly found six containers full of chunks of meat from the body of pensioner Maria, who had not been seen around her neighbourhood in Madrid for a month.
Most of Maria’s internal organs were missing, although part of her intestines had been shoved in among household rubbish.
Police later released footage of Gomez being taken into custody.
They have not yet been able to establish when or how the 66-yearold died but are expected to charge her son with killing her.
Gomez is now undergoing psy- chiatric evaluation before a court appearance in the Spanish capital, after which he is expected to be remanded in prison pending further proceedings.
Gomez, who had worked at one time as a waiter, is one of three children.
His cabinet maker father died when he was 15 and he lived in a block of flats with his mother near the city’s famed Las Ventas bullring.
The first photos of him emerged yesterday as former friends told reporters he had become a problem for his family after getting hooked on drugs and booze.
The respected Spanish newspaper El Mundo reported that Maria’s body had been cut up into more than 1,000 tiny pieces.
Police sources said they believed Gomez cooked some of the flesh, ate it and shared it with the dog.
A spokesman confirmed he had been arrested but declined to comment on the cannibalism reports.
