WIMBLEDON Jubb has wild day out with two heroes

- By Harry Pratt

THEY say never meet your heroes – but just try telling that to rising British talent Paul Jubb.

The Hull-born teenager reckons his Wimbledon dreams have already come true after meeting idols Andy Murray and Rafa Nadal in one magical day at the All England Club.

South Carolina University student Jubb, 19, was handed a wildcard following victory earlier this year in the USA’S prestigious national college championships. Previous winners of that event include legends John Mcenroe and Jimmy Connors.

But while too young to know about those times, Jubb (right) is a massive fan of Nadal and, of course, national treasure Sir Andy.

bit. He congratulated me on my recent success and wished me good luck.

“I think we all take Andy for granted a bit – but what a guy, what a sportsman. I remember the day when he won Wimbledon the first time and the atmosphere.

What a great time it was.”

If Murray is Britain’s greatest modern-day tennis ace, he still has some way to go to match Nadal.

Jubb adored the Spanish clay-court king when growing up – so to be on the same table as him in the players’ canteen was a mind-blowing moment.

The world No.472 went on: “I was having lunch with my coach... next to Rafa. “This was the guy whose kit I used to beg my family to buy me after every Grand Slam.

“Now I’m in the same tournament as him – it’s very weird.

“I was obsessed with Rafa. I didn’t like anyone else. When Rafa lost in the French Open one year, I cried. “I loved his energy and his defence. But the older I get the more I’ve based my game around Novak Djokovic’s.”

As for a first-round clash against Portugal’s Joao Sousa, Jubb said: “I hope to get my teeth stuck into it and that I can make it gritty.”
