GEMMA: NHS SAVED MY LIFE Star needed 9 docs when ha ving 4lb 10oz baby
GEMMA Atkinson has revealed she nearly died after the traumatic birth of her first baby.
The ex Hollyoaks star suffered a huge haemorrhage after tiny Mia was delivered by emergency Caesarean.
Nine NHS doctors saved her life and comforted Mia’s distraught dad, Strictly dancer Gorka Marquez.
The actress, 34, posted heartwarming photos of her with Mia, who weighed just 4lb 10oz, and Gorka, 28.
She wrote that her “weary smile doesn’t quite portray how happy I was inside as 30 hours earlier, things could have gone very differently.”
Gemma was taken to the operating theatre for a c-section after Mia’s heart rate fell. She said: “I was able to calmly keep my breathing technique and accept whatever is best for Mia just do it.” But t here was more drama two hours after the birth when Gemma suddenly felt very ill.
She said: “I was having a big haemorrhage. I lost a lot of blood.
“I don’t remember much other than having around nine doctors in the room, some injecting me, hooking me to drips, physically pulling clots out of me and one comforting Gorks.”
She thanked Royal Bolton Hospital staff for looking after her – and praised her baby, born on July 4.
Gemma said:“i’m going to remind Mia of this story any time she has doubts about what she can achieve. She’s been a fighter from day one.”
Spanish-born Gorka shared his love for Gemma, who he met on Strictly in 2017, and wrote after seeing her care for Mia: “I thought it wasn’t possible to love someone even more... WELL IT IS!! And times two!!”
