Pompey Close out win

-

DONCASTER manager Darren Moore felt they were worthy of their late point at Rotherham.

Kieran Sadlier’s addedtime header cancelled out Aaron Morley’s strike.

Moore said: “I thought it would have been cruel for us to lose here. The spirit, the work-rate and endeavour were all there. I thought it was a wonderful advertisement for the division.

Rochdale boss Brian Barry-murphy said: “We’ll move on, we’re very happy with how we played and we’ll evolve and get better.” JOEY BARTON admitted the wind assisted his side as they defeated Wimbledon.

Kwesi Appiah gave Wimbledon the lead but Paddy Madden equalised before a cross from Josh Morris sailed in for the winner.

Barton said: “The wind is due an assist bonus. Josh’s cross gets the wind and causes havoc.”

Wally Downes said: “It was a game of two halves for us.”

Chambers was robbed on the touchline by Marc Mcnulty, who crossed for Lynden Gooch’s equaliser for the visitors (right).

The 64th- minute strike cancelled out Luke Garbutt’s opener for the Blues.

The Tractor Boys had 17 attempts on goal and Lambert felt his team should have secured all three points. Lambert said: “The first half was brilliant, chance after chance.

“The atmosphere, everything was great. We got the goal, there was not one problem in the game.

“The mistake was terrible, a really terrible mistake, and he knows it.

“We were excellent, we c o u l d n’ t c ompl a i n with t he way we played the KENNY JACKETT hailed Ben Close’s wonder-strike after Portsmouth picked up their first league win of the season.

Close scored a stunning 30-yard volley days after netting from a similar sort of range against Birmingham in the EFL Cup.

Jackett said: “It was a great goal, the goalkeeper made a couple of excellent saves but Ben hit it really whole game. We don’t make that error, we win the game.

“It’s not a bad thing sometimes when you’re disappointed with a draw.”

Sunderland boss Jack Ross was unhappy with his side’s first- half performance, but was pleased with the reaction after half-time.

“The first half was a long way short of where we need to be and a long way short of what

I would put true and it was a great finish into the top corner which set us on our way.

“It was a solid performance but I feel there is more to come from the side as well.”

Among the crowd was Hollywood actor Will Ferrell, a guest of Pompey’s American owners.

Jackett said: “I did meet Will Ferrell, he came in to the dressing room and there was a lot of banter between himself and the team which was my name to,” he said. “Ultimately, it always comes back to me. There was a frank discussion at half-time because we were behind to a team that did the fundamentals better than us.

“They were aggressive, competitive, physical. That gave them a platform to create and we were deservedly behind.

“Second half we do that and take something from the game.

“The second half was a huge difference and emphasises that you need to do the basics right to show the quality you have.”

good natured and genuinely funny.”

Tranmere’s best chance came when Manny

Monthe headed wide when unmarked at a corner while Kieron Morris also forced a save from home goalkeeper Craig Macgillivary.

Tom Naylor sealed victory for Portsmouth, and Rovers manager Micky Mellon said:

“There were moments we passed it around well.

“We needed more composure and quality.”
