EXPLOSIVE drama, period adaptation­s and reality favourites are all on your small screens this autumn.

Here are some of the highlights for the season ahead.

SANDITON, ITV

A new adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel, which tells the story of a spirited and impulsive woman who moves from her country home to a fishing village that is trying to reinvent itself as a seaside resort.

From Andrew Davies, the man behind War And Peace and Les Miserables, it is tipped to be the next Downton Abbey. THE CAPTURE, BBC1 Holliday Grainger plays a detective in this new surveillan­ce thriller. It promises to look at a troubling world of misinforma­tion, fake news, and the extraordin­ary technologi­cal capabiliti­es of the intelligen­ce services.

THE LOUDEST VOICE, Sky Atlantic Oscar-winner Russell Crowe stars in the seven-part series as television executive Roger Ailes, who was the founder of Fox News and later an adviser to Donald Trump’s presidenti­al campaign. Ailes’s career ended following sexual harassment accusation­s. CATHERINE THE GREAT Sky Atlantic Helen Mirren stars as the Empress of Russia in this four-part period drama full of politics, passion and power. It delves into the politicall­y tumultuous and sexually charged court of one the most powerful female monarchs. WORLD ON FIRE BBC1 Sean Bean, Helen Hunt, Zofia Wichłacz and Jonah

Hauer-king star in this Second World War drama which tells the story of the first year of the global conflict.

THE LIGHT, Channel 4

Kiri writer Jack Thorne reunites with Sarah Lancashire for a new drama, inspired by Grenfell, about the explosion of a large constructi­on project that leaves many dead and devastates the local community.

THE CROWN Series three, Netflix

Olivia Colman inherits the burden of the crown worn so dazzlingly by Claire Foy, who played Queen Elizabeth II in series one and two.

The saga of the British royal family, also starring Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip, moves into an era covering 1964 to 1976. RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE

BBC Three via the iplayer

Rupaul’s Drag Race is poised to sashay on to screens with ten home-grown acts fighting to be crowned our next drag superstar. Graham Norton and Alan Carr will join the judges Rupaul and Michelle Visage on the panel.

THE GREAT BRITISH BAKE OFF Channel 4

Paul Hollywood, Prue Leith, Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding are back in the tent with a new batch of budding bakers. But who will whip up a storm and who will be left with a soggy bottom?

STRICTLY COME DANCING, BBC1

All 15 celebritie­s have been confirmed. We are about to witness former footballer David James, soap favourite Catherine Tyldesley, TV host Anneka Rice and comedian Chris Ramsey strutting their stuff to try to win the trophy.
