KNOCKOUT Smith poleaxed by Archer before Aussies turn up the heat in second innings

-

world, was being worked over by Archer ( left), bowling like the wind on his Test debut.

Smith was led dazed to the dressing room, but with a mixture of bravery and folly later returned before falling just short of a third consecutive century in this series.

Australia coach Justin Langer said: “It was an ugly incident.

“He was a bit rattled in the medical room, but as time progressed he went through the concussion protocols and came through that.

“He was more worried about his arm, which was very sore, but an X-ray showed there was no break. “He was so keen to get back out there. He said to me, ‘How can I get on the Lord’s honours board if I’m in the dressing room’.”

Smith’s courage meant Australia had first innings parity, and then the visiting bowlers returned fire with fire to rampage into the England batting line-up.

Archer might have had only two wickets to his name but he opened the door for the rest as Stuart Broad took four and Woakes three. But the visiting bowlers responded with equal venom as they tore into the England batting line-up.

Jason Roy was out in an ugly manner for just two, squared up by the pace of Pat Cummins who took the catch himself.

In came England skipper Joe Root. And out he went first ball as a beauty from Cummins that he nicked behind.

It was the first time in 153 Test innings that Root had suffered a golden duck. Joe Denly survived the hat-trick delivery, was dropped on seven by David Warner at slip, and scored 24 before giving a tame caught and bowled to Peter Siddle.

Even gifts from Australia – two dropped catches and two failures to review lbw decisions – barely helped. Rory Burns was out for 29 to a rising delivery from Siddle and England were grateful to reach 96-4 by the close.

Woakes added: “I think we can win the game. It’s an amazing game to be a part and it’s in the balance.”
