The jury is still out on Maguire ... Chelsea played to his strengths but Wolves will be a tougher test PAUL PARKER EXCLUSIVE

-

Steve Bates PAUL PARKER needs more than one game from record signing Harry Maguire to be convinced he can inspire Manchester United to better things.

With pundits and fans alike revelling i n Maguire’s impressive debut for United against Chelsea a week ago, former Old Trafford titlewinner Parker is sceptical.

After just 90 minutes of action, the one-time United and England star isn’t getting carried away with the narrative that the £80million former Leicester defender has suddenly transformed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team into a force to be reckoned with.

And as United prepare to face nemesis Wolves at Molineux tomorrow, Parker is sounding a note of caution.

“There’s no doubt Maguire started off well with a decent enough performance and a clean sheet, but let’s not kid ourselves. That wasn’t the strongest Chelsea team to come to Old Trafford in recent years and they caused United plenty of problems, until they collapsed,” he said.

“The win flattered United and allowed nice things to be written and said, but I’m not getting carried away.

False

“United scored those two quick goals, so for me, it was a false scoreline. People are saying Maguire is the best ever on the evidence of just one game.

“But Chelsea suited him, they played to all his strengths. There were no balls down the side of him and no one ran in behind for Chelsea.

“It was all played out in front of him and that’s why Maguire looked OK.

“Let’s see what he’s like at Wolves where United were well beaten twice last season. Wolves outplayed them, passed through them, and United couldn’t cope with their clever movement.

“It’s how he deals with it as a United centre-half, not a Leicester centre-half.

“Every game is a lot bigger than any Leicester game he’s ever played because United are always under t he microscope – the world is always watching.

“My first season told me that. I got strains I’d never had with the high tempo and the pressure to do well every single minute in a United shirt.

“So you can’t judge him and say he’s going to be a Man United great after one game up against a weak Chelsea team.

“Maguire’s profile was really elevated after the World Cup in Russia, but who did England play? The group matches weren’t taxing and he l ooked a dominant defender winning headers
