Taylor made for stitch-up

- By JASON MELLOR at Oakwell

LEE BOWYER told Lyle Taylor to keep it ‘cheeky’ after the striker’s ice-cool late penalty maintained Charlton’s unbeaten return to the Championship.

Taylor strolled to the spot before sending Barnsley keeper Samuel Radlinger the wrong way to haul the Addicks level as stoppage-time approached.

Charlton remain second in the earlyseason running thanks to Taylor’s third goal of the campaign and his 13th in the last 16 games, after Bambo Diaby’s foul on Conor Gallagher.

Bowyer said: “It was a cheeky penalty but that’s become Lyle’s trademark, so as long as he keeps on scoring them I don’t mind.

“I’ve seen him take them like that now lots of times.

“Funnily enough, for some reason I didn’t fancy him to score this time, but he stuck it away and we earned our reward for hanging in there.”

Barnsley stretched their unbeaten home run to 29 league games to close in on an 85-year-old club record, but were left to reflect on allowing three precious points to slip away. Cauley Woodrow put them ahead with a memorable first-half strike, controlling a looping clearance on the edge of the box before finding the top corner with a stunning first-time volley.

Charlton levelled five minutes before the break as on-loan Chelsea starlet Gallagher scored for the second straight game.

The England youth midfielder impressed watching Under-21s boss Aidy Boothroyd with an eye-catching display, and found the bottom corner from 10 yards after good approach play by Jonny Williams.

Conor Chaplin restored the Tykes’ lead three minutes after the break with a confident closerange finish after being released into the box by Luke Thomas.

In a hectic finale, Chuks Aneke saw a close-range effort beaten away by Radlinger after the Charlton sub was put through by Williams.

Barnsley were unable to hold on to their advantage as Taylor sauntered up to level from 12 yards, and Tykes boss Daniel Stendel said: “We fought well but it’s disappointing to lose an equaliser so close to the finish.

“Even so, it’s still a good point. But it shows the difference between last season in League One and the Championship – if you switch off for just one second you can be punished.” BARNSLEY CHARLTON 3 ........
