A man developed a severe respiratory disease after using electronic cigarettes.

Details of his death emerged as experts were probing a mystery lung issue linked to the devices.

Research across the US on adults aged from 17 to 38, revealed there were 193 “potential cases” across 22 states in two months to August 20.

The man who died came from Illinois where 22 sufferers were being studied by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dr Jennifer Layden, the state’s chief medical officer, said: “The man was hospitalised with an unexplained illness after vaping or e-cigarette use.”

CDC director Robert Redfield said: “This tragic death reinforces the serious risks associated with e-cigarettes.”

There is no evidence of an infectious disease being responsible.

Officials have ordered lab tests of vaping liquid samples. Many of the reported cases involved vaping THC, the main active compound in cannabis.

E-cigarettes are considered less dangerous alternative to tobacco, with Public Health England saying they are highly effective in helping to quit smoking.

But experts claim that more research and better regulation is needed, with products not safe for children, young adults or mums-to-be.
