POETRY I Salah’s sensational goal seals vi

- By SIMON MULLOCK at Anfield

HANDING out a hammering to Arsenal has become a habit for Jurgen Klopp – but even by his standards this was something special.

Mo Salah’s secondhalf double ensured another dose of Anfield pain for the Gunners after Joel Matip had crucially broken the resistance of Unai Emery (right) and his men just before half-time. But it was the manner of Liverpool’s performance that suggests Klopp is about to preside over another exciting season.

The visitors tried to meet fire with fire for 41 intriguing minutes – but, once Matip headed home the opening goal, they were blown away.

Liverpool could have easily doubled their final tally.

As it was, the European champions still inflicted a defeat which means that Arsenal have been beaten on their last four visits to Anfield by an aggregate of 15-3.

Arsenal substitute Lucas Torreira grabbed a late consolation, but nothing could deny Liverpool their 12th Premier League win on the bounce. And a victory at Burnley on Saturday night will see Klopp shatter a club record that was first set by Kenny Dalglish’s team in 1990, when the title last resided on Merseyside.

Liverpool are already setting the pace this season after making it maximum points after three games.

There was only 80 seconds gone when Andy Robertson’s low shot flew wide of the far post, with Roberto Firmino inches away from delivering a decisive finishing touch.

But, while the story of the opening period may have been Liverpool pressing, Emery’s plot to leave Pierre-emerick Aubameyang and Nicolas Pepe forward, as the home side pressed, brought the visitors three fine first-half chances.
