Hugill can be a Jor dropper

- By CLIVE HETHERINGTON at Hillsborough

QPR boss Mark Warburton reckons matchwinner Jordan Hugill can hit the heights.

The striker flopped at West Ham and his loan move to hometown club Middlesbrough last term didn’t work out, but a brace against the Owls took his tally to five for Rangers.

Hugill cost £10million when he joined the Hammers from Preston in January 2018, and Warburton said of the on-loan star: “There was a lot of interest in him the summer.

“He’s a top Championship striker and he wants to go higher – and he can go higher – but he needs a stage to perform and he has that with us.”

Fernando Forestieri made an impact on his first Owls start this season, winning a 23rd-minute penalty converted by Steven Fletcher.

But Hugill scored twice in four minutes after grabbing his first on the hour as Wednesday’s 100 per cent home record was shattered.

The result is a setback to caretaker-boss Lee Bullen’s hopes of landing the Owls job, but he insisted: “I’m not interested in that – it’s not my decision.”

Instead, he slammed his side’s “primary school” performance.

The Scot said: “I’ve been at this club long enough to know the demands here and that was nowhere near acceptable.

“We were one-paced, lethargic, didn’t move the ball quickly enough – and the two goals we lost you wouldn’t see in a primary school playground.”

Wednesday were forced to make a late change after Tom Lees pulled out with a hamstring injury, Dominic Iorfa stepping into defence.

But the hosts were close to a second-minute lead when left-back Morgan Fox whipped in a cross Fletcher got on the end of – only for keeper Joe Lumley to make the block.

Fletcher was more clinical when he sent Lumley the wrong way after Forestieri went to ground under the challenge of Grant Hall.

Shortly after the break home goalkeeper Keiren Westwood foiled Nahki Wells, but Hugill had better luck.

Firstly he ran on to Wells’ through-ball and rounded Westwood to slot home.

Then he was presented with a close-range finish from Ryan Manning’s leftwing centre – with Wednesday’s players complaining that Hugill was offside when the initial ball was sent through.
