put Mr Watson’s job up for review. But a senior Labour source said: “We have so much good stuff on the agenda and this is going to overshadow it all.

“It beggars belief that there are people who would do something like this on the eve of conference. It’s kamikaze politics – totally destructive. It remains to be seen whether we can get things back on track.

“But there’s no one in their right mind who would have wanted conference to start with such a blatant and inept power grab.” When he arrived LABOUR’S general secretary Jennie Formby yesterday praised the NHS for saving her life after she was diagnosed with breast cancer this year.

She received a standing ovation as she stepped on stage and was given flowers by Jeremy Corbyn.

Ms Formby, 59, thanked all NHS staff for their “outstanding care”, adding: “They have saved my life.”

She also called Boris Johnson an “openly and unrepentant racist”. in Brighton, East Sussex, for the conference which began yesterday, Mr Watson was greeted at the station by cheering supporters.

He said: “I think it’s very sad. We are supposed to be here this week to fight Boris Johnson, to outline our positive vision for the country at a general election, and I think it’s been undermined on day one.”

Asked if he thought Mr Corbyn knew of the plot, he said: “I don’t know what Jeremy knew or didn’t know.”

Referring to yesterday’s NEC meeting, a source said: “Jeremy Corbyn proposed that the motion [to abolish the post of deputy leader] not go to a vote and instead there be a review of the position of deputy leader and other positions in support of the leader.

“This will consider how democratic accountability can be strengthened to give members a greater say, expanding the number of elected positions, and how diverse representation can be further improved. The NEC agreed to his proposal.”

The coup attempt drew criticism from across the board.

TSSA general secretary Manuel Cortes said: “On the cusp of a general election... we should be focusing all our energies on the battle against this shameful Conservative government.

“Now is not the time for navel gazing, but for making sure our conference carries our message of hope across our country, giving hope to millions.”

Former Labour minister Yvette Cooper called the plot “completely mad and incredibly destructive”.

Another outraged former party minister Ben Bradshaw condemned the attempt to “purge” Mr Watson as “totally f***ing insane”. DRIVERS will get £2,000 to trade-in old cars for electric models, under plans to be unveiled at the Labour conference on Tuesday.

Shadow Business Secretary Rebecca Long Bailey said:“the air in our cities will be cleaner.”
