ARSENAL WOLVES UNAI’S

Third skipper in a week.. third match without win

- By HECTOR NUNNS at the Emirates Stadium

UNAI EMERY shrugged off speculation his Arsenal job is under threat after another setback.

His side escaped a mauling after Wolves peppered them with 25 shots to just 10 from the Gunners.

Under a third captain in a week on the pitch i n Pierre- Emerick Aubameyang, Emery’s men slipped to a third Premier League game in a row without a win.

A turbulent week, after skipper Granit Xhaka’s four-letter blast at fans and defeat against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on penalties, had left the club in shock.

And yesterday, despite the return of favourite Mesut Ozil (below), there were boos at full-time with another lead blown.

Asked about his position and the crowd reaction, Emery said: “I am demanding of myself and feel a responsibility to work and come back better.

“I am frustrated with the result, too. We have had two home opportunities to win matches and we couldn’t do that. But the players worked hard.

“It is disappointing today. We got the first goal and needed to get a second to get more confidence because we knew Wolves could come back.”

Xhaka was not even on the bench after last week’s unrest with Aubameyang taking the armband – a switch Emery admits could become permanent.

He said: “Pierre-emerick could be the captain going forward if he can take that responsibility. Today he did.

“He is one captain, and we will analyse our situation and decide. As for Mesut Ozil, he worked hard, played well and that was a positive.”

It was just a second Premier League appearance of the season for Ozil and his presence was cheered by the Emirates crowd.

From kick-off Wolves’ Diogo Jota was a pest but when he was chopped

down by Calum Chambers, Joao Moutinho could not trouble Bernd Leno with the free-kick.

A mistake f rom Leander Dendoncker allowed Aubameyang to shoot, but straight at Rui Patricio, and then Alexandre Lacazette found Lucas Torreira in space but his angled shot was deflected wide.

A goal was coming and it arrived after 21 minutes. David Luiz went marauding on the right wing and his pass found Lacazette who rolled it to Aubameyang, who passed a ninth goal of the season into the net.

Arsenal could have doubled their lead but Torreira saw his shot blocked and Aubameyang fired the rebound over.

Leno kept out a fierce drive from Matt Doherty and just before halftime Moutinho claimed a shot hit Sokratis on the arm – but there was no penalty or VAR check. After the interval Ruben Neves had a curling effort clawed away by Leno and Lacazette skied over when set up by Ozil.

But a determined Wolves equalised after 75 minutes.

Dani Ceballos went to sleep from a throw-in and from Moutinho’s cross Raul

Jimenez headed home his

11th goal of the season.

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito

Santo said: “I expected a tough match and that is what we got. We struggled a bit defensively.

“Perfection doesn’t exist, but we keep chasing it. We had a lot of shots, and my only complaint is that we were not more clinical.”
