WIGAN ATHLETIC SWANSEA CITY SWANSEA SURRGE ON Late strike has boss Cooper purring

- By NEIL GOULDING at the DW Stadium

STEVE COOPER insists his soaring Swansea side will remain grounded after snatching a dramatic injurytime winner at Wigan.

Sam Surridge’s 92nd- minute header did the trick for the Swans to round off a fine week.

After beating bitter rivals Cardiff, super-sub Surridge headed home at the death to stun Wigan.

“It was a real collective effort,” said Cooper. “But we won’t get too high after this win.

“We’re very, very happy of course, but we are a little bit frustrated because we didn’t capitalise on such a good start.

“We scored early then conceded a poor goal. Nathan [Dyer] and Sam should get the credit for the win, but it just shows the quality in our squad.

“The city and the football club is about the collective, we win and lose together.”

It was Dyer who gave the Swans the perfect s t ar t when he fired them ahead in the 12th minute.

Kosovo midfielder Bersant Celina provided the assist as Dyer, with acres of space in the box, picked out the bottom right corner with a sweet left-foot strike.

The Latics pushed hard for an equali s er and centreback Chey Dunkley went close with a bullet header which flew inches over the bar and Kieffer Moore headed just wide.

But Dunkley won a penalty after being hauled down by Mike van der Hoorn and Moore netted from the spot to level proceedings after 21 minutes.

Midfielder Gavin Massey had a shot deflected over from the edge of the box as the hosts went in search of the lead.

At the other end Celina also had a shot deflected over before Wayne Routledge threatened as the Swans started brightly after the break.

Jamal Lowe went within a whisker of giving the Latics lead,

but his thunderbolt effort skimmed the crossbar just before the hour mark.

But Surridge won it with a clinical header from fellow subsitute Connor Roberts’ cross as the Swans kept their promotion charge on track with a second win in a row.

Wigan boss Paul Cook said: “That was a big sucker punch.

“We’ve had nine days of pain because we’ve conceded late goals in our last three games.”
