Rare birds hatch in UK
TWO chicks from a breed of bird near extinction have been hatched in captivity at a British nature reserve.
Conservationists have been trying for eight years to save spoon-billed sandpipers, down to only 200 breeding pairs worldwide.
The birds have been hit by loss of habitat in East Asia and bird trapping in Bangladesh and Burma.
Nick Jarrett, of the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust in Gloucestershire, said: “This is a huge breakthrough.”
