DOM’S TOTAL DOMINATION

He can be the best in Europe claims Ancelotti

- By SIMON BIRD at St James’ Park

DOMINIC CALVERT-LEWIN has been told he can become one of Europe’s top strikers by new Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti.

The striker, 22, has been Ancelotti’s goal-scoring hero in both his games in charge with his double seeing off Newcastle yesterday.

He’s now scored five in his last five Premier League appearances.

Calvert-lewin reckons new boss Ancelotti has rekindled Everton’s spirit after their earlyseason toil under Marco Silva and insists he will feed off his experience working with elites.

Ancelotti said of his matchwinner: “He is a good guy. He is going to be at the top in England and Europe.

“He has all the qualities to be a top striker.

“He is a fantastic striker, clever in the box, sharp. He is young and also has to improve.”

Calvert-lewin said: “He is a fantastic manager who has worked with great players and for me it is the best possible experience.

“I just have to be like a sponge and take it all in. I am enjoying my football as you can see but for the lads it has been a great period and a great month. We have got that togetherness back in the team. We are getting back to where we want to be after a below-par start.

“It was not good enough and it was vitally important we turned it around.

“We wanted first to get into that middle cluster and go beyond that.”

Calvert-lewin’s first came from Gylfi Sigurdsson’s volley.

The ball deflected off Federico Fernandez, before landing at the

minute. Newcastle were fuming because in the build-up referee Lee Mason incorrectly gave a corner kick, when Michael Keane had headed over.

It was one of several marginal decisions that went against Steve Bruce’s men.

St James’ Park was full to capacity, with the club’s 10,000seat season ticket giveaway kicking in, and filling previously empty seats from a fan boycott.

They saw one of Newcastle’s best spells of the season before and after half-time, and an equaliser through Swiss international Fabian Schar.

A mighty back-post leap from Andy Carroll, onto a free-kick by Jetro Willems, left Schar with a close-range volley. Calvert Lewin’s second came after 64 minutes to snuff out a strong Geordie revival.

The home side had won the ball back after a strong press, but Carroll stumbled and was robbed, with too many teammates out of position.

Richarlison pounded down the right wing and his cross was tapped in by Calvert-lewin, with Schar dawdling.

Ancelotti said: “I really enjoyed the performance. We suffered a lot in the middle of the game, but we got more control. The spirit of the team is good. They fight for each other and enjoy working hard. This is the key of this victory.”

Newcastle’s display degenerated after they went behind for a second time and this was a first loss at home since the opening day of the season. Bruce claimed

NEWCASTLE

Newcastle should have had two penalties. “After 30 seconds it was a penalty and a red card,” he said. “Miguel Almiron has tried to stay on his feet and been honest and not rewarded.

“For the Carroll shout, the ref should be allowed to come and have a look on the monitor.”

It was the sort of tight game Everton had lost under Silva, but added discipline and focus under Ancelotti was the edge.

It is also a puzzle Newcastle have played worse in many games this season, but won.
