Canaries denied by Stockley Park

- By NEIL MOXLEY at Carrow Road

HARRY KANE’S late penalty eventually saved Spurs – but not as much as VAR did.

England’s skipper struck with his usual accuracy to rescue a point for Jose Mourinho after the Premier League’s bottomplaced club threatened to end the year with a bang.

Kane claimed his 11th league goal of the campaign eight minutes from time from the spot after the Canaries showed they are still up for a scrap.

They twice led the north Londoners, but Carrow

Road was turned into a seething pit of anger after officialdom stepped in to ruin the hosts’ evening.

Daniel Farke’s strugglers were a goal to the good towards the end of the first half when Mourinho’s side appeared to be caught out for a second time.

Mario Vrancic had already fired Norwich ahead and then produced what appeared to be a killer crossfield pass to find team-mate Teemu Pukki, who finished with aplomb.

It appeared for all the world like a bona fide goal.

The ball was back on the centre spot for the re-start and the Canaries’ fans were still celebrating. But officials at Stockley Park ruled it out for offside.

That was the cue for uproar – and a mighty letoff for the visitors who should have been two goals behind at the break.

As it was they managed to scrape a point by the final whistle, but they would have been facing a far steeper uphill battle had they been trying to fight back from a two-goal deficit.

Farke said: “It’s difficult. I’m asked each and every week about VAR but just a general thought: I would like it to make the game more fair. In our last match against Villa we conceded a goal from a clear and obvious mistake. A throwin was given in the wrong direction. We didn’t touch the ball. Ten seconds later they have scored.

“This week, if you ask people you’d see my player started his run one yard behind their player.

“Pukki is offside by one inch. Was the line drawn exactly at the time when Mario Vrancic passed the ball? He is offside by one inch.

“But these decision are not in the roots of the game. We want to support the attacking game. We want to support attackers. It’s wasted energy, from me, talking about it.

“No VAR goes in our favour. That’s the way it feels at the moment.”

It was undoubtedly the turning point. Tottenham were at sixes and sevens.

Boss Mourinho (above) abandoned the three-man backline, threw Lucas Moura and Davinson Sanchez into the fray and the match changed.
