SEZER CAN BE LIBERATOR’

- By Julie Stott By Julie Stott

NIALL EVALDS swooped with two lethal late body blows to knock the stuffing out of Toronto.

The Wolfpack – with Sonny Bill Williams again largely underwhelming – hauled themselves level with 10 minutes to go.

But full-back Evalds put the Red Devils back in control when he sent in Dan Sarginson for an unconverted try.

Then, with three minutes left, he snuck in past some sloppy Wolfpack defending to put the result beyond any doubt.

Wolfpack centre Hakim Miloudi, who had been moved to full-back, said: “I put my hand up and said sorry. It is my mistake. I thought the ball was going out and I was waiting but he came in and scored.

“It is my bad but the players have told me it is a team effort.”

Evalds’ late strike sealed a first win for the Grand Finalists’, following their thrashing by St Helens, and leaves Toronto still looking for their first Super League win.

Wolfpack boss Brian

Mcdermott dodged the post-match press conference, but relieved Salford coach Ian Watson said:

“It got a bit nervy towards the end.

“It was a must-win game for us and I thought it was a really good win.

“Toronto are playing with confidence and they are a team that is

MARQUEE signing Aidan Sezer grabbed the headlines in Huddersfield’s surprise opening win at Catalans last weekend.

But it’s an under-the-radar Giant who will soon be hogging the limelight, according to Kenny Edwards, reasonably settled. They throw the ball about and challenge you a hell of a lot, and they will cause a few teams problems early doors.”

Dual-code superstar Williams started for Toronto after coming off the bench in last week’s defeat by Castleford, and was certainly better than he had been on his debut.

But apart from a few trademark offloads, in his second spell in the second half, there is clearly much still to come from the New Zealander.

Toronto drew first blood with Gary Wheeler racing over.

Salford stand-off Tui Lolohea set up the first home try for Kev Brown, and added the

LFAthe Huddersfield forward, who also made his debut in the 32-12 win over the Dragons.

Edwards admits he has been shocked by just how good stand-off Lee Gaskell has been in training.

Gaskell has struggled to establish himself at the top level since being released by St Helens in 2013.

But Edwards says the conversion to nudge them into a 6-4 lead.

That scoreline remained until Salford struck twice in two minutes early in the second half, with tries from Lolohea and Rhys Williams.

Wheeler grabbed his second try in the 54th minute and Evalds denied Ricky Leutele another touchdown.

But there was no stopping Brad Singleton as he powered over, with Blake Wallace converting to level it.

The sniff of first blood in the top flight was soon wiped out though by Salford’s grandstand two-try finish.

Miloudi added: “The coach said we played a lot better this week. We want to shock Wigan next week.”

Tries: Brown, Lolohea, Williams, Sarginson, Evalds. Goals: Lolohea 2.

Tries: Wheeler 2, Singleton. Goals: Wallace 2.

29-year-old is primed to shine thanks to 2019 NRL Grand Final scrum-half Sezer.

Edwards said: “I see Lee do stuff in training that I’ve never seen.

“Last year he was hindered as he didn’t have a dominant half to steer the team around, which meant he couldn’t play his game. Aidan will allow him to do that now.”

Leeds were thumped 30-4 by Hull in their opening fixture and Sezer, who scored a try and kicked six goals against Catalans, warned: “They’ll be itching to go and we will need to be at our absolute best.”

Giants centre Jake Wardle is crocked and will be replaced by Jordan Turner.

New Zealander Ava Seumanufagai is back in contention for Leeds.
