THE WELCOME

Stepping into the 18th-century thatched pub we were greeted by the landlord and the delicious smells of hearty home-cooked food. After being shown our room, we settled in by sampling some of their local beers and cider.

THE ROOM

Our en suite super-king room was one of six newly refurbished rooms above the pub. Our window offered picturesque views of the rolling Wiltshire countryside, and we were woken each morning by birdsong. The country came indoors too, with walls decorated with pheasants and deer.

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD The area is popular among cyclists, walkers and horse riders. On a route suggested by the landlord, we enjoyed views across the hills and passed ancient woodland, keeping our eyes peeled for pheasants and deer, especially smaller muntjacs. The pub is next to racehorse stables, so we watched them gallop by.

THE FOOD

This is hearty pub grub at its best, with modern takes on pub classics and a variety of specials, from fisherman’s hotpot to venison burgers. The hunter’s board with scotch eggs was a highlight, as was the incredible sticky toffee pudding with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream.

THE SERVICE

Friendly and efficient.

THE SCENE

The bar is a lovely bolt hole with a great atmosphere. The hours will melt away as you get stuck in to one of their board games in front of the open fire or on the sun-soaked terrace outside.

LOVED

The exceptionally friendly landlord and lady. HATED

The pub is not easily accessible by train, so take a car.
