Late Gin no serum for tooth

- By Tom Hopkinson

HEIKO HERRLICH’S gleaming smile was wiped from his face for a second time in a week as substitute Daniel Ginczek snatched a late winner for Wolfsburg.

Herrlich, who only took charge of Augsburg 10 days before the Bundesliga was suspended, was forced to miss the game after breaking quarantine rules last week.

The man who was supposed to breathe fresh air into Augsburg’s bid to avoid the drop left the team hotel to buy a tube of toothpaste and ended up in selfisolation for his troubles.

That meant he was forced to watch on TV as Ginczek rocked up late on to give Kevin De Bruyne’s old team the victory.

Augsburg cancelled out Renato Steffen’s first-half header when Tin Jedvaj nodded in from close range soon after the break.

And they looked to have taken the lead shortly after the hour-mark when Felix Uduokhai, two minutes after coming on as a substitute, headed home from just inside the six-yard box.

The VAR intervened and referred referee Felix Brych to his video monitor, and he only needed a couple of replays to rule the goal out for offside.

The game appeared to be heading for a draw but Ginczek, on as a 61st-minute substitute, had other ideas.

Wolfsburg had been the better side and got their tails back up after Uduokhai’s disallowed goal.

They were unlucky not to add a second when Jan Moravek’s deflected effort hit a post. But they got their reward for plugging away when Ginczek stole in at the far post in the first minute of stoppage time to turn home former Newcastle full-back Kevin Mbabu’s low cross.

looked doomed for the drop after failing to make inroads on their relegation rivals following a goalless draw with FORTUNA DUSSELDORF.

goals in 16 secondhalf minutes helped HERTHA BERLIN blow away HOFFENHEIM in their mid-table clash.
