LOCKDOWN ‘DOUBLE STANDARDS’ We stayed put: Why didn’t he?

- By Aaron Sharp and Amy Sharpe

A DOCTOR who missed his dad’s funeral to obey the lockdown rules is “disgusted and appalled” by Dominic Cummings’ actions.

Dean Burnett, 37, could not say goodbye to his father Peter who died aged 58 in April, because he followed the guidelines flouted by the Prime Minister’s aide.

Neuroscientist Dean said: “When my dad contracted Covid19, I couldn’t see him. When he went to the hospital, I couldn’t visit him. And when he passed away. I couldn’t be there.

“I’ve endured the worst emotional pain of my life because of the lockdown. And yet I stick to it, as I can’t imagine ever inflicting this pain on anyone else.”

The dad-of-two, from Cardiff, added:“i’m enraged that Dominic Cummings felt it was OK to break the rules while I, and many others, have had to go through hell.”

His outrage was shared by student Emma Conway, whose mum Linda’s funeral could only be attended by only three people.

Emma, 30, from Southport, Merseyside, said: “All of mum’s family live in Burton-on-trent in Derbyshire – less than half the distance of London to Durham.

“But they said they weren’t willing to break the rules because they were there for a reason. So to see Cummings ignore the rules and risk lives is just infuriating.”

Amanda Fay, 46, a neighbour of Cummings’ parents, said: “I don’t know why he should be allowed to travel. If he was staying with elderly parents as well it would be putting them at risk.”

Mum-of-two Kate Soper, 37, husband Jez, 42, and sons Alfie, three, and nine-month-old Stan all had to stay home with the virus.

The educational technologist from Levenshulme, Manchester, said she did not once think to go to her mother-in-law who lives just minutes away in Wilmslow.

She said: “When I was unable to even go to the shop for baby formula, I would have loved to have taken advantage of some ‘secret clause’ which allowed me to get help. Of course, it didn’t exist. It’s an absolute joke.”
