LET IT DOUGH... House to rent for just £170 a month

- By John Siddle

HOUSE about this then? Welcome to Britain’s cheapest rental – priced at just over £170 a month.

The £175 bill works out at £5.83 a day – just 14p more than a large Big Mac meal in Mcdonald’s.

The bargain end-terrace property has been listed to let in the proud former mining village of Horden, Co Durham.

Experts believe it is the cheapest family home to rent in the UK for many years.

The “spacious” double-glazed property, just a short stroll from a beach and near two schools, features two double bedrooms, fitted bathroom and two reception rooms.

The 1920s home is a whopping 97 per cent cheaper than the average £6,000-amonth cost of a two-bed property in London’s exclusive Mayfair.

But some locals issued a warning to would-be tenants that certain streets in the village were plagued with yobs.

Former primary school teacher Doug Langan, 68, said: “There is a lot to like about Horden. There’s a great community spirit and it’s right on the coast.”

But he added of the area where the house stands: “Some of the houses are owned by retired miners who have been there 40 years but others have gone to rack and ruin. £175 is cheap but you will get what you pay for.”

Fifth Street, just 700 yards from Durham’s Heritage Coast, has proved a hit with families searching for a budget base.

The low-cost let could even be popular with commuters in larger towns able to work from home and looking to save a fortune.

Graeme Wetherell, 55, who moved to Horden aged ten, said: “Strangers from other parts of the country have moved here because it is so cheap.

“We pay £475 a month for a two-bed bungalow so I can’t imagine what you’d get for £175. But Horden is a nice place to live with good people. Our parks are lovely.”
