Werner can be a Kop earner if he picks right club

- By Steve Bates

GERMAN goal-machine Timo Werner has been warned not to make the same mistake as Fernando Torres – and choose the wrong club.

The RB Leipzig striker is a top target for Liverpool, who have been tracking the 24-year-old German international for more than a year.

But, with the coronavirus pandemic hitting football hard, Jurgen Klopp may be denied the green light to splash £52million on Werner in the current financial climate.

Manchester United are also on Werner’s trail – having lost out on signing Erling Haaland, who joined Borussia Dortmund in January – while the prolific scorer is admired by Chelsea, too.

But former Bayern Munich and United midfielder Owen Hargreaves reckons Werner should be wary of his next destination.

And he believes the striker would be better putting his move to Liverpool on hold rather than making the same mistake as Torres.

The Spaniard scored for fun in his four seasons at Liverpool.

But he endured a nightmare when he left Anfield for

Chelsea in a world-record

£50m deal in 2011, scoring just 20 league goals in four years at Stamford Bridge.

Hargreaves said: “I think Timo Werner is going to score goals wherever he goes. But it comes down to personnel. He will be doing this, doing homework on who will be a good fit for his game.

“We saw this with Fernando Torres when he left Liverpool.

“The way Liverpool played, they were an incredible team, with Steven Gerrard playing those balls through the middle and it was a match made in heaven.

“Then he goes to Chelsea, where they had a lot of slow possession, and there was no space for Fernando to run into.

“In the end, that’s not a great fit. He was a super player, Chelsea were a super team, but you’ve got to play to a player’s strengths.

“I think Timo Werner is that type, the Fernando Torres type, where he is super-explosive, he will run away from anyone.

“Having that ability to run in behind and into that space, it would suit his game.

“When you think about a team like Liverpool, they do that. They counter and transition better than anyone. He would suit them.”

Werner (below) was enjoying an outstanding season before the pandemic halted football, with 21 goals in 26 games.

BT Bundesliga pundit Hargreaves added: “He is a goalscorer. Wherever he goes, he will score goals.

“But he has to make sure he gets the right fit. I’m sure that’s what he is doing now – making sure he finds that fit.”
