Celebrity crossing

- By Patrick Hill

A REBOOT of a veg-packed video game has just hit the market – and celebs reckon it can’t be beet.

Several famous faces are hooked on Animal Crossing, where players can “escape to a deserted island and create your own paradise”.

Hobbit star Elijah Wood,

Game of Thrones fave Maisie

Williams and model Chrissy

Teigen are among those playing the Nintendo Switch game, where you trade in turnips.

They have all revealed the tag names they use so fans will know when they’ve stumbled across one of the stars.

Elijah, who uses the screen name Elwood, has stunned gamers by turning up on their islands to pick fruit and sell turnips. One of the players he called on was gaming writer Louise

Blain, whose island contains a “creepy murder room”.

She told the BBC:

“I had Elijah Wood – Frodo Baggins himself – on my island selling his turnips and making a good profit. He had a good tour of the island. It’s real people in a

virtual world having a nice time.” Animal Crossing first came out in 2001 but an update came out in March, just as the lockdown was beginning. It sold 13 million copies in just six weeks. Blink 182 rocker Mark Hoppus and Captain Marvel star Brie Larson are also big fans of the game.

Oscar winner Brie, who shared her island on Twitter and even offered tips to new players, said she loved the original Animal Crossing as a child.

“It was such a huge deal,” she said. “Me and my sister and my mom created a rule that whoever finished their homework first got to play first, so we would blast through it.”
