EASTENDERS hardman Jake Wood saved the life of an elderly neighbour locked in a shed in sweltering heat.

The actor – Albert Square’s Max Branning – was in the middle of recording a podcast when he heard the OAP’S yells of terror during last week’s heatwave.

True to his screen image Jake, 47, sprang into action.

He said: “Our neighbour David, a lovely old boy, had trapped and it under wraps until a cast online Zoom call for the 50th birthday of fellow star Liam Fox, who is Dan Spencer.

Natalie and Jonny who plays Dr Liam Cavanagh, were pictured together for the first time looking cosy as they sat at the kitchen table.

A source said: “Natalie has had her fair share of romps as Moira but this time she’s found love off screen. Everyone is so happy for them.

“Lockdown gave them some quality time together and they couldn’t be happier. It’s still early days locked himself in the shed. He was screaming and shouting, so I went round and he’s got a little catch that goes up and down.

“Obviously he hasn’t got a handle on the inside. So he’d been in the shed and it shut and he couldn’t get out.

“He looked a bit hot in there. It was a bit warm.

“I don’t know how long he’d been banging for. You go into panic mode when it closes. You bang for about 15 or 20 minutes and you start panicking, don’t you?” Recounting the drama to exboxer Nigel Benn on his podcast Pound for Pound, dad-of-two Jake said his neighbour was unharmed by his ordeal.

He said: “He looked all right. He had a smile on his face,” when Jake opened the door. I think he was trying to style it out but inside his heart was pounding away.”

Jake, who lives in Hertfordshire, is expected to start filming on the BBC1 soap again this month – thanks to a decision by bosses after lockdown measures were eased.

Emmerdale actors went back to work this week and Coronation Street is set to begin filming again from next week.
