‘We’ll show you respect’

- By Simon Mullock

Solskjaer will have to slash his wage bill and trim his squad to make room for Sancho and possibly Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish, who fuelled transfer rumours this week by telling friends he has found a house to buy in the north-west.

That’s put £400,000-a-week Sanchez in the firing line along with Lingard, Andreas Pereira, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling.

Solskjaer is prepared to offload all of them, although he privately acknowledges getting a buyer for Chilean flop Sanchez will be tough.

The former Arsenal striker has been a disaster since his 2018 move and is on loan at Inter Milan.

Lingard has fallen down the pecking order, with Old Trafford coaches surprised how far his performance levels have dropped.

His transfer value has also plummeted but United would ask at least £20m for the 27-year-old.

PEP GUARDIOLA has confirmed that Manchester City will give new Premier League champions Liverpool a guard of honour – but the show of respect will not be a tunnel of love.

He believes Jurgen Klopp’s men must be given the acclaim they deserve in the traditional manner at the Etihad on Thursday.

Guardiola said: “We are going to do the guard of honour, of course. Always we will receive Liverpool when they come to our house in an incredible way. So, of course, we are going to do this, because they deserve it.”

City insiders confirmed that Guardiola’s words about treating visiting teams with courtesy is a reference to the events of April 2018 when Liverpool fans attacked the Manchester City team bus when the clubs met at Anfield in the Champions League.

And there are fears that thousands of Liverpool fans will travel to Manchester. Plans could now be put in place to prevent any fans from travelling.
