Tykes hit the bottom

- By ADAM LANIGAN at Oakwell

THIS goalless draw did neither side many favours and left frustration all round.

Barnsley went bottom after Luton’s win at Swansea – despite making it only one defeat in their last seven.

But manager Gerhard Struber was satisfied at how his team coped with Millwall’s physical threat.

“I’m happy with the performance,” said the Austrian. “The problem is the results with the other teams.

“It was a big challenge against this massive opponent, but my boys did a brilliant job, especially from set-pieces.

“In the end it may be a very important point for us.”

Lions boss Gary Rowett (above) was not happy, losing ground on the top six, with just one point from six since the restart.

They are now five points outside of the play-offs with seven games remaining.

“I think it’s two points dropped really,” he said. “There was just a little lack of quality from us with our final ball to make the difference.

“I’m semi-pleased with the clean sheet after how we defended last week, but a bit disappointed overall.”

In a cagey opening, set-pieces provided the main action as Cauley Woodrow forced Lions goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski to tip over his free-kick.

Millwall’s Shane Ferguson was even closer as his curling free-kick hit the underside of the bar with Jack Walton beaten.

Another Ferguson free-kick caused problems but ex-barnsley striker Tom Bradshaw headed wide.

Mason Bennett, the on-loan Derby forward, then delivered a teasing cross that was just beyond the unmarked Bradshaw, only five yards out.

Home skipper Alex Mowatt tried to spark his team after the break and his 20-yard drive stung the palms of Bialkowski.

Their need for a goal grew greater, but defender Michael Sollbauer’s header didn’t have enough power to worry Bialkowski.

Barnsley’s players were not happy with Bennett for a challenge on Jacob Brown, but ref Jeremy Simpson opted for yellow.

Brown recovered but when found by substitute Conor Chaplin’s back heel, he shot straight at the goalkeeper with the best chance of the game.

Deep into injury time, Bialkowski saved from Mads Andersen’s volley.
