FORGOTTEN VICTIMS
Landmarks turn blue to mark 72 yrs of our NHS
DOZENS of iconic landmarks are being lit up blue this weekend to honour the NHS’S 72nd birthday today.
Blackpool Tower, London’s Shard, Wembley Arch and Downing Street are among those illuminated, with a candle put on the doorstep of No10.
Prince Charles paid tribute to the NHS in a recorded birthday message.
He said: “The current pandemic means that the NHS – and the entire country – has been through the most testing time in the service’s history.
“Our remarkably selfless nurses, doctors, paramedics and countless other staff have made costly sacrifices to provide treatment for more than a hundred thousand patients with coronavirus and thousands more who needed other care. And, in tribute to them, we have come together as a nation to thank them for their skill, professionalism and dedication.”
The Prince paid tribute to other key workers too such as farmers and shop workers and volunteers, adding: “This renewal of our community spirit has been a silver lining during this dark time.
“Our communities have been put to a severe test and, true to our best traditions, they have overcome it with determination and imagination, with good sense and with good humour.”
Last night at 8pm the Dean of St Paul’s Cathedral in London lit a candle of remembrance to the lives lost during the coronavirus pandemic.
Today a Second World War Spitfire is due to fly over hospitals in the East of England and a final Clap for Carers will take place at 5pm.
A special programme will be broadcast on BBC One.
IN an upcoming radio interview, the Duchess of Cornwall says husband Charles is in remarkably great shape at 71.
