Masks to be compulsory next week

PM BLASTED FOR DITHERING OVER RULE

-

The Prime Minister is set to tell MPS that masks will be needed when in confined spaces to encourage a swifter shift to “more normal” living.

But Shadow Health Secretary Jonathan Ashworth blasted his dithering and said the public just wanted to do the right thing to keep the Covid-19 infection rate down.

Confusion

He said: “Throughout this pandemic, ministers have been slow and behind the curve.

“Many people are questioning why ministers still haven’t made a decision on face masks, and then we have the Prime Minister publicly dropping hints and sowing more confusion.

“People want, and deserve clarity about how this will work and we will be demanding that in the Commons.”

Former health secretary Jeremy Hunt also made a veiled attack on the PM and said: “I think with public health advice, you just need simplicity.”

The Government fears a rise in coronavirus cases as more people return to work.

Mr Johnson has only days to issue new guidance, which will require a change to emergency legislation before Parliament’s summer recess starts on July 22.

“stricter” new rules would be needed to overcome make more Brits wear masks. He said: “It’s very interesting because in places like China and the Far East, they don’t actually have mandatory face coverings. It’s just part of the way they do things.

“Clearly, we don’t have that culture here and we have to think about how we make it happen and how we make it work.” It is thought that the mandatory wearing of masks will be given the green light this week, with practical details – such as the definition of a “confined space” – to be explained.

It comes as holidaymakers in Ibiza, Majorca, Menorca and the Catalonia region of Spain face fines of £90 for not wearing masks in public.
