NOT STRESSED ..OR OBSESSED Pep: It won’t be a disaster if we don’t win the Champions League this year

PEP GUARDIOLA has insisted if he doesn’t take Manchester City all the way to win the Champions League it won’t be a disaster.

Instead, when he’s gone, the Spaniard says he will reflect on leaving an “awesome” legacy at the Etihad.

Jubilant City now face French side Lyon in the quarter-finals next Saturday night at the start of a quest to become kings of Europe after beating Real Madrid as the tournament is played out in Lisbon.

And after seeing off Zinedine Zidane’s ageing all stars, Guardiola peeled back the layers of his sporting life to showcase what is really important to him.

His City stars have won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and are three-time winners of the EFL Cup during his four-year reign.

Judge

Only the Champions League is missing from that collection.

But Guardiola, who won the trophy twice at Barcelona (right), isn’t obsessing over the golden prize – and isn’t stressed that City might not be considered a great side if they don’t conquer Europe.

He said: “The people can judge our job or our period when we have finished, the way the media and the spectators can do it too.

“I’m not here to judge whether it’s enough or it’s not good. We tried before to win it, we work a lot and we will try again.

“People may say we have to lift this title before you can say, ‘OK, we’ve ’ d done i’ it’. But f for us i’ it’s been b a bi big success. And for me and my staff in the last 10 years, we’ve played in the last 10 Champions Leagues.

“How many big clubs cannot play it this season or the next, or are in it every year, especially with the quality of the Premier League?

“I live in Manchester and work at an incredible club, and those will be my memories – the group of players I have had for four or five years.

“And the backroom staff I have. This is my happiness, working here.

“We will try everything to win the Champions League. Like last season, like for f the h diff different times i when h we were out. This competition is so difficult to win, there are so many good teams. But we are going to try.

“But if I left right now, if we don’t win the Champions League, I won’t see it as a disaster. What I know I will leave will be great, awesome.

“It’s not about winning titles – it’s about relationships with the English people I have met here.

“I have met incredible people. This is my life. Part of me is a manager but I am a human being. I am a person. I live with them, eat dinner with them, we laugh and share bad moments together.

Friends

“And is that going to change those relations r because we don’t win the Champions C League? Honestly, no!

“Because it happened in Munich. We won a lot of titles, but we didn’t win the Champions League.

“Am I going to say I was unhappy at Munich? No! And that I don’t have friends fr in Munich ? No, I have many!

“So I can assure all the City fans and myself that we’re going to do everything we can.

“But sometimes the opponent is b better and wrong decisions by the st strikers or mistakes from defenders ha happen – it’s part of the life, the pr process, the football.

“It’s still a long road ahead. We lost an and drew against Lyon last season, so th that’s the reality. Beating Real Madrid wa was an important step for our co confidence this year and the future.

“Our best success in this competition was the semi-final, which is why we have to be so calm... and we will see what happens.”
