As he tucked in to a second helping of chicken curry with his fiancée, Lakhvinder Cheema might have been discussing their upcoming wedding, due to take place the following month on Valentine’s Day 2009.
But, soon after finishing the meal, Lakhvinder, 39, and Gurjeet Choongh, 21, fell violently ill.
Hours later, Lakhvinder
– nicknamed Lucky – died in hospital. Police later found traces of the poison aconite in the curry.
Before his death Lucky, of Feltham, West London accused his ex- girlfriend
Lakhvir Singh of the poisoning. He had broken off their 16-year affair just two months earlier after deciding to marry Gurjeet, who also had to be put into a coma for two days until doctors could give her an antidote to the poison.
Gurjeet had previously warned Lakhvir to stay away from her man and said she was “jealous” of her relationship with Lucky.
In court, Lakhvir, 45, tried to blame her brother- in- law for the poisoning but a lodger had seen her remove the container of curry from the fridge on the morning
TAINTED: Curry leftovers of the attack. Police also found traces of the poison in the married mum-of-three’s coat and handbag.
In February 2010, Lakhvir was found guilty of Lucky’s murder and causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Gurjeet. She was handed a life sentence with a minimum of 23 years.
Edward Brown QC, prosecuting at the Old Bailey, said the couple had been looking forward to a long life together.
He added: ‘That future happiness was cut short in the most terrible and cruel way… perhaps jealousy, anger and revenge all playing their part, Lakhvir Singh decided to poison them using an extremely toxic and deadly substance.”
