Know your rights This week: New lockdown restrictions Scam of the week

-

From tomorrow, it will be “illegal” to gather in groups of more than six.

This has sparked lots of questions from readers, many concerned about wedding and other event bookings.

Here is what you need to know:

WEDDINGS

The good news is that weddings are exempt.

However, the restriction that you must have no more than 30 guests remains.

I am also still being asked about refunds for weddings that were cancelled during lockdown. It appears many venues are still refusing to give refunds, which I find astonishing given that the law is very clear –“the venues must refund for any services they have not provided”.

This was confirmed by the Competition and Markets Authority earlier in the year when they issued their guidance on the law.

OTHER EVENTS AND GATHERINGS

Funerals, Covid-secure team sports, schools, workplaces and households or “support bubbles” that have more than six people in them will also be exempt from the new law.

However, the new limit of six people from up to six households will apply to adults and children indoors and outdoors (including at venues such as pubs and restaurants).

I have been hearing reports this week of a bogus Netflix bargain being sold online.

The fraudsters make out that they have a special promotional package for a one-off lump sum. The code they send you works. But the reality is they are selling a single valid Netflix account to thousands of victims, who each get “bumped off” when the next one signs up and logs in.as ever, beware any deal that sounds too good...
