JOBS for the week

- BY TOM HOPKINSON

Prepare outdoor seedbeds for March sowings – clear of weeds and cover with polythene or horticultural fleece to warm them up.

Plant summer flowering bulbs such as liatris, begonia and gladioli in pots indoors.

Prune winter flowering shrubs such as mahonia and viburnum when they have finished their display.

Apply well rotted farmyard manure or garden compost around rhubarb crops.

Bulbs that were forced to flower indoors such as hyacinth can be planted outdoors now.

Protect blossoms on apricots and peaches from frosts with horticultural fleece.

Sow tender crops such as tomato, chilli and cucumber in a heated propagator or sunny windowsill.

Delay turning your compost heap at the moment as otherwise you may disturb sleeping hibernators.

BOXING

TOMMY FURY is taking his career back to the future, by returning to the gym that he and brother Tyson used when they were youngsters.

World heavyweight champion Tyson Fury and Love Island star Tommy (above) both started boxing at Steve Egan’s gym in Wythenshawe.

Tommy, 21, who is trained by their dad John and aiming for the fifth win of his fledgling professional career on Saturday at the Copper Box Arena, is using it again alongside his base at Arnie’s Gym.

Tommy said: “Tyson boxed at the Egan gym and I boxed for them a few times in the amateurs, so we’re taking it back to our grassroots.

“As soon as I got off the plane at Manchester Airport after Love Island, I said that all I wanted to do was box. So we went to see Frank Warren and got the show the road.

“Love Island was great fun, brought me a lot of privileges and earned me money, but boxing outweighs the celebrity life by a mile.

“Dad is training me as always, pushing as hard as he can. He is very old fashioned, with Rocky-style training methods.

“If you’ve had a bad day he’ll let you know... if you’re told you’re doing all right every day you never improve.”
