Cherries fear

- By RON LEWIS at Loftus Road

TODD KANE struck late on to leave Bournemouth sweating over their promotion hopes.

This was a first loss for caretaker boss Jonathan Woodgate as in-form QPR scored late on.

And with Thierry Henry waiting in the wings, the Cherries will now be looking over their shoulders at the play-off rivals breathing down their necks.

Woodgate admitted: “We made basic errors and we got punished.

“It’s really, really, frustrating. We weren’t clinical enough in both boxes. But we did perform well and we did deserve to win.”

With an approach in to CF Montreal to hold talks with Arsenal great Henry,

Woodgate doesn’t know whether he will still be in charge for their crunch clash with Cardiff on Wednesday.

“We will just wait for what the board say,” Woodgate said.

“It can be unsettling for the players and fans but there is nothing we can do about it. I just have to get on with it and keep my own counsel.

“We have to try to get in the play-offs and promotion. That is the aim, that is the focus.”

QPR eased any lingering relegation worries with a fourth successive win.

But Hoops manager Mark

Warburton is not getting carried away with the fine form.

“This division is ruthless and the moment you start relaxing it does bite you on the bum,” Warburton said. “So, everything we do now is about Preston on Wednesday night.

“When you look at the quality of the opposition that tells you all you need to know about the result.”

Bournemouth had the best of the chances in a scrappy first half, Seny Dieng denying first Philip Billing and then Shane Long in one-onones after they were sent clean through.

Chances began to flow after the break, as Yoann Barbet headed an Ilias Chair freekick against the bar before intercepted by Stefan

Adam Smith failed to guide a Johansen on the edge of the Lloyd Kelly shot on target area to the stroke the ball past from point-blank range. Asmir Begovic.

Kane scored the winner seven minutes from time, firing in Albert Adomah’s far-post cross, after Macauley Bonne neatly flicked on Niko Hamalainen’s ball up the line.

Bonne could have wrapped the game up late on but somehow missed.

Warburton added: “Bournemouth are a highlytalented squad so the players deserve enormous credit.

“It is a really good win.”
