Arrest over virus death

- By Nicola Small and Martyn Halle

HOME care providers have been told to strictly follow Covid-19 guidance after a gross negligence manslaughter case was brought against a carer.

The UK Homecare Association issued the warning to its 2,000 members after a home carer was arrested in connection with the death of Covid patient.

UKHA chief executive Jane Townson said only two insurance firms now provided cover to care groups.

Unlike the NHS, private firms are not protected against Covid-19 claims by the Government.

She said: “The cost of these cases could run into six figures easily. If you are a small care provider, how are you going to find that kind of money?”

POSTIES have complained that new uniforms will make them look “like characters from Star Trek”.

Royal Mail is testing outfits, such as red quilted gilets and black trousers and leggings, for its 125,000 postmen and women.

Staff will also have unisex hi-vis yellow jackets and baseball caps.

Some posties are unhappy with the first change of clothes in a decade.

One posted a picture of from a 1960s Star Trek episode saying: “Where’ve I seen those red and black uniforms before?”

Another said: “They forgot to provide a lollipop stick for the bright yellow uniform and leggings.”

But others defended the uniforms as “practical and contemporary.”

Staff will start trialling them this week.

Mark Baulch, of the Communication Workers Union, said: “Some think it’s good, but you are never going to please everyone.

Royal Mail’s Ricky Mcaulay said: “We worked closely with our people to come up with designs.”
