CAMPAIGN: Mcmahon

LABOUR is launching a campaign to bring back hard shoulders on motorways after at least 38 deaths have been blamed on their removal.

Shadow Transport Secretary Jim Mcmahon is calling on Grant Shapps to shut the fourth lane of smart motorways.

He claims that switching on the red X closure sign in the nearside lane would be all that is needed to create temporary hard shoulders until permanent ones can be rebuilt.

Mr Mcmahon said: “All the Transport Secretary has to do is pick up the phone to Highways England to get hard shoulders reinstated.”

Blame

Sally Jacobs, 83, blames smart motorways for the death of her husband Derek, 83, two years ago.

He was mown down on the M1 in Derbyshire after his van got a puncture.

She said: “He was hit before he could get over the crash barrier to safety.

“Smart motorways should be called killer motorways. It’s not manslaughter, it’s murder.”

A coroner has also referred Highways England to the CPS to consider corporate manslaughter charges over the death of Nargis Begum, 62, who was killed on a different bit of the M1 in September 2018.

A Highways England spokesman said: “We will of course cooperate fully in any investigation.”
