Sunak web tax rapped

‘Wombles’ tackle litter

- By Nigel Nelson by Karen Rockett

CHANCELLOR Rishi Sunak has been warned not to go it alone taxing digital giants like Amazon.

World economic watchdog the OECD says countries acting this way could spark a global trade war.

Mr Sunak is looking at a web sales tax on top of the 2% Digital Services Tax on profits brought in last year.

He would scrap DST if international agreement is reached on a new tax system at the UK G7 in June.

But a sales tax could not be part of that deal as it would be in a shake-up in domestic business rates.

The OECD reckons unilateral digital taxes could drive down global wealth.

Secretary-general Angel Gurria said new world rules were needed as “failure would risk tax wars turning into trade wars”. Amazon UK paid £14.4million in corporation tax in 2019 on revenue of £13.7billion.

A MAN enraged by dog walkers hanging poo bags in trees has formed a group of 360 litter pickers – inspired by The Wombles.

Johnny Sanders launched TF11 Wombles after seeing people tidying alone in his waste-blighted hometown.

Named after its postcode and the recycling-mad 1970s children’s TV characters, the group co-ordinates efforts on Facebook.

Johnny, from Shifnal, Shrops, said families now go out together and treat litter picking as a hobby. He said: “It’s taken off wonderfully. I spend Friday nights litter picking. It started as a way to curb my anger.”

Group member Malcolm Rolling said: “I found a crisp packet from 2011 blowing across a field. Where it has been for the past 10 years, I don’t know.”
